Gran Canaria – The Miniature Continent
Over 1200 km south of Spain, at the latitude of the Tropic of Cancer, and just 100 km off the shores of Africa, there are thirteen islands in the Atlantic Ocean, referred to by ancient Romans as ‘the islands of the happy’, and today – the Canary Islands. The islands have a volcanic origin and one can find proof of this can be found everywhere: there are fields of solidified lava, fertile volcanic soils and deep craters of extinct volcanos. The one called La Caldera, situated on the island of Palma, is the deepest volcanic crater in the world. From its rocky rim to the bottom there are over two kilometers.
The islands are an autonomous Spanish territory and are therefore easily accessible by flight from most major European cities. Here, however, the harmonized European rules on VAT do not apply and the application of turnover tax is a matter for the national or local authorities of the Canary Islands. This means that many of the goods offered (such as alcohol, cosmetic products, electronics) are not subject to VAT. And yes, here one can buy a liter of Canary rum for 4.90 euros or original Ray-Ban sunglasses for 50 euros.
Of all the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria is the second most populated island in the archipelago after the island of Tenerife. Also known as ‘a continent in miniature’, Gran Canaria boasts numerous white and black sand beaches, lagoons, inlets, sand dunes, mountains and tropical flora. Gran Canaria is a former volcano, which is 47 km long and 55 km wide. The capital, Las Palmas, is acknowledged as the biggest EU city situated outside Europe, with a population of about 385 000 people, made up of emigrants from around the world, mainly from Europe and Mediterranean Africa.
The story about the origins of its name – Gran Canaria – is quite interesting. All starts with a breed of bloodthirsty dogs called canis, which were used by the first inhabitants of the isles, the Guanche tribes, for food. The Canary Islands were formerly known as ‘The Islands of Prosperity’ and ‘The Happiness Islands’.
Climate in Gran Canaria is one of the best in the world, with over 330-340 sunny days throughout the year and daytime temperatures over 30°C during the summer and around 25°C in winter. In the capital Las Palmas, one can visit Christopher Columbus’s house ‘Casa de Colon’, who had lived here until he discovered the New World. One of the biggest tourist attractions in Gran Canaria is situated in the south of the island, near Maspalomas. These are the dunes declared a World Nature Reserve by UNESCO. Besides having perfect conditions for recreation, rest, cultural and wildwide tourism, Gran Canaria is also a preferred shopping destination due to its duty-free zone status.
In Las Palmas there are numerous theaters, cinema halls and an opera; it is also a venue for regular concert events and dance festivals. The city hosts the Canary Islands Annual Music Festival, as well as an International Film Festival. Las Palmas’ Carnival is famous all over the world and is one of the biggest attractions for tourists.
